Lobster Smack

If you ever find yourself near Canvey Island and craving a classic British pub experience with a hearty twist, Lobster Smack is one place you shouldn’t skip. Nestled on Haven Road, SS8 0NR, this charming pub brings together tradition, comfort, and a surprisingly varied menu that’ll impress locals and visitors alike. Whether you're stopping by for a quick bite, planning a relaxed Sunday lunch, or seeking out a cozy spot for a solo dinner, Lobster Smack delivers.

Right off the bat, the atmosphere here is warm and unpretentious. Think rustic fireplaces, live music nights, and a pub that knows how to balance comfort with character. Accessibility is clearly a priority too-there's wheelchair-accessible parking, entrance, seating, and even toilets. That attention to detail already says a lot about the kind of experience you're in for.

One thing that sets Lobster Smack apart is the diverse food offering, which goes well beyond the standard pub fare. Sure, you’ll find staples like Fish & Chips and a beautifully done Sunday Roast, but the real surprise is the range of global influences tucked into the menu. Ever tried a Steak Philadelphia Sandwich at a British pub? Here, it’s a favourite. You’ll also come across hearty dishes like Pot Roast, Meatloaf, and even a delightful Chicken and Brie Pie that blends comfort with a gourmet edge.

For burger lovers, the Beef Burger is juicy and generously portioned, while lighter bites like the Prawn Cocktail or Chicken Bacon & Avocado Sandwich cater to those after a healthier option. Sweet tooth? The Chocolate Brownie and Cobbler are consistent crowd-pleasers and pair wonderfully with their great coffee selection-ideal for afternoon diners.

Speaking of drinks, Lobster Smack is a real gem for beverage enthusiasts. It boasts a curated beer list, with highlights like Hobgoblin for those who love traditional English ales. Not into beer? No worries. The pub also serves a fine wine list, refreshing cocktails, and even spirits for the late-night crowd. And yes, you can also just pop in for a casual drink-ask for “Just a Beer” if you're feeling cheeky. Their tea selection is solid too, which is a nice touch for daytime visitors or non-drinkers.

Dining at Lobster Smack is easy whether you’re part of a group or riding solo. There’s outdoor seating that’s perfect in warmer months, and the dine-in experience is relaxed and unfussy. It’s also popular for lunch and dinner, with many locals choosing it as their go-to spot for catching up or unwinding after work. The place gets lively during weekends, especially during live music events or when there’s a big match on TV-yes, it’s also great for watching sports.

Another plus? The service is friendly without being overbearing. Staff members know their menu well and are happy to recommend dishes based on what you’re into-whether you’re craving something rich like the Sirloin Steak, or just want to nibble on Nachos with your drink.

Compared to more polished, gastro-style pubs in Essex, Lobster Smack keeps things real. It's not trying to be flashy. It’s authentic, welcoming, and knows what it's good at: hearty meals, cold drinks, and an atmosphere that makes you want to stay a little longer. The casual vibe, combined with thoughtful accessibility and diverse offerings, makes it an ideal stop for all kinds of diners-from first-timers to locals who know exactly what they’re getting.

Looking for more than just a meal? Lobster Smack offers that familiar comfort of an English pub while still surprising you with its menu depth and cozy quirks. Whether you're craving a plate of Fish Finger Sandwiches, a glass of Sake (yes, they have that too), or simply want to find a friendly spot with great desserts and late-night food, it’s a reliable pick that doesn’t disappoint.

Great family pub to come to enjoy your lunch with family, friends and your four legged friends. They have specially designed menus for dogs there too! Very relaxed atmosphere with delicious food and excellent service! With gluten free and vegetarian options available at your request. Booking is advised, although, when we arrived there without booking, we were lucky to be accommodated by staff fairly quick. The car park is medium size. The Lobster Smack is located where Holehaven Creek meets the river Thames which you can visit after your meat for an energetic long walk to work out your calories. :)

Was recommended by a friend. Very nice free house with its traditional interior design with old fashion. The waitress was very nice and friendly, however it was occasionally hard to get her attention at times. Food was very nice and the quantity was a good size for either 2 or 3 course meal for £15.50 or £18.50. Had to wait over 30 mins for the dessert which was a little disappointed. Food was well presented. Good parking is available. Would recommend.

Great staff, food is delicious. Pet friendly area accommodation is fabulous. The fact that the chimney was on, made it so cozy. Can’t wait to be back.

Had a meal today (Sunday). First time in the restaurant. Service was friendly. Food tasted nice however items missing off of the Roast on both myself and my Wife's plates. Portion size very small given the price. I had the trio Roast and had one slice of each meat and the slices are litteraly paper thin. As I say tasted nice. Was missing Mash, Yorkshire Puds and Crackling on both meals. We didn't realise at the time but just commented that it seemed expensive for what we got. If we had of realised we would have asked. Also to note menu states unlimited potatoes and puds but staff were busy in the other bar and not about to ask until we had finished. All in all a nice meal but did leave feeling a bit disappointed given it was our first visit. I don't think we would be back on a Sunday for a roast but may visit again on a different day for another meal. Has potential but currently there is another big contender on the island that is much better and cheaper for Sunday roasts. I won't name as I'm not writing the review to send trade somewhere else. I am just giving constructive feedback back so the restaurant has the opportunity to take note and improve. Many Thanks
